  • From what I gather, GenoPro is sorta the industry standard, but it's $50 and I'm not going to use it that frequently, so I'm reluctant to spend that much. And, yeah, I know it has a 14-day free trial, but I will likely want to use it again at some point in the future.
  • Questions regarding the installation of GenoPro and requesting a registration key. Question or problem with our web site, forum, online backup and any other online services. GenoPro offer a free service for publishing genealogy online. It's easy, fast and ad-free! Learn more about how to use GenoPro family trees hosting.

Recommendation: There are valuable tutorials available at www.genopro.com/tutorials/. These lessons will teach you how to accomplish simple and complex tasks like how to show who resides in the same household, how to create a divorce and remarriage, etc. You are free to download and print these examples. Hopefully, the directions provided below will be enough to get you started in creating your genogram.

  1. Make a printout of this page so that you can follow these directions as you proceed with registering for GenoPro and building your genogram.
  2. Email The Center and request a “registration key.”
  3. Once you have your registration key, Click on the GenoPro button above and follow the directions to download and install the software
  4. Accept the “License Agreement” by clicking on the round radio button in front of the sentence that reads: “I accept the agreement.”
  5. Now enter the “registration key” and the GenoPro icon will appear on your desktop for future use
  6. The grid will now appear allowing you to begin your genogram
  7. Press “f” on your keyboard for “Family Wizard” in order to add a new family.
  8. Insert family names and other information as directed (e.g. date of birth, gender, etc.).
  9. Then click “OK” which will save the information.
  10. Click on “family member name/symbol” to add on another family member (husband, wife, child, etc.). Blue squares will surround the person you will now be working on. (They will disappear when you move on to working on another family member)
  11. Press “F” for “Family Wizard” again.
  12. Insert names of new family members.
  13. Click “OK” to save these family member names
  14. Click on each person’s name to get the blue square to appear when you add or edit information……or to begin adding Family Interaction symbols (cut-off, conflict, etc.)
  15. Click on “Family Interaction” symbols (conflict, cut-off, etc.) on the bottom toolbar and drag (by holding down on your mouse) between name you have clicked on (and is surrounded by the blue square) and the second person’s name and then lift your finger from the mouse to stop. (This will create the symbols you have learned in class)
  16. Click on “E” for females, “W” for males and complete additional information as requested, to the extent desired, to add more data to your genogram (e.g. education, occupation, at this point you can even add pictures, etc.)
  17. In order to connect one person to another (e.g. connecting you to your spouse), place the cursor on the one person (e.g. yourself) then right click and drag the line to the other person (e.g. your spouse).
  18. Double click on the lines connecting two individuals in order to get a “relationship box”
  19. To change the properties (e.g. color) of an object (e.g. a person or a line connecting two people) double click on that object.

Hint #1: If you choose to use the “Auto Arrange” function, test it first to make sure that that the “Auto Arrange” function placed your family members in the correct birth order.

Hint #2: Be aware that the more information you add about any given person on your genogram (e.g. yourself) the program will automatically rearrange the layout which might require you to make some adjustments.
